Education has always been synonymous with
empowerment be it economic or social. If India wants to be successful in the 21
century, it has to look for ways for making the system of education robust, accessible
and equitable. While numbers and quantity are still a challenge in India, the role
that quality plays in any scenario cannot be undermined. Higher quality of education
would translate into better quality of life. Research suggests that if India adheres
to the path of quality in all educational dimensions then investments in education
have the potential to deliver truly large economic as well social gains.
Understanding and evaluating the quality of education requires a holistic picture
of the unique and complex characters of schools, boards and government policies
and the ways in which environmental factors both inside and outside the school affect
student achievement’
However, despite its importance, many people find quality an enigmatic concept.
It would be true to say that we all know quality when we experience it, but describing
and explaining it is a more difficult task. Of one thing we can be certain: quality
is what makes the difference between things being excellent or run-of-the-mill.
